Q. Why do aircraft sound louder at night than they do during the day?
A. Nighttime noise events seem louder because the ambient noise is lower. More noise events may be noticed at
night compared to daytime hours when a higher ambient noise level exists.
Q. What are the noisiest aircraft that operate at The Ohio State University Airport?
A. Jets certified under previous federal standards (Stage 2), such as the Lear Jet 25, create the highest noise
output and appear to be the cause of most noise complaints. In the future, it is anticipated that many Stage 2 jets will be phased out and replaced
with newer, quieter jets, as the Stage 2 jets are no longer in production. As such, noise exposure levels should decrease, even with increased
activity. Note that Stage 2 jets cannot be restricted from operating at the Airport, per the 1990 Airport Noise and Capacity Act.
Q. What is The Ohio State University Airport doing about Stage 2 aircraft?
A. OSU Airport is a founding member of Sound Initiative, a group of airports and non aviation associates working
with Congress to phase out Stage 2 aircraft in all airports. Sound Initiative
Q. What is a noise abatement guideline?
A. Noise abatement guidlines are in-flight operations designed to minimize noise disturbances to residential areas along
flight paths and areas close to the airport. Noise Abatement Guidlines
Q. Will aircraft continue to become quieter?
A. Modern aircraft have become much quieter over the last two decades. The largest business jet operating at The Ohio State University Airport is
remarkably quieter than one of the smallest. The reduction in aircraft noise is expected to be maintained, but experts are not projecting that each
subsequent generation of engines will be able to achieve the vast improvements of the last 20 years.
Q. How does the community report its inquiries to the The Ohio State University Airport?
A. We encourage all neighbors with inquiries to contact us directly by calling 614-292-9055 or by sending an e-mail
to noise@osuairport.org. Provide your name, address, phone number, and the date and time
the aircraft flew over the location where the disturbance occurred. Inquiries can also be made by visiting our Web site at www.osuairport.org
and clicking on the Noise Management Program link.
Q. What happens when I submit a noise complaint?
A. We will respond directly and confidentially with the neighbors who make inquiries.
The External Relations Office at the The Ohio State University Airport will log your confidential complaint. Research will be done to find the aircraft that correlates with your complaint.
You will then be contacted with a response about your complaint. Noise complaints are treated confidentially and saved in a database. However, as a public agency,
the Airports complaint records are subject to State and Federal open records laws.
