Airport’s annual Don Scott Trot: 5K on the Runway marks record-setting success in 2019
On your mark, get set, go! Early on September 28, The Ohio State University Airport – Don Scott Field closed its runways to aircraft and opened them to participants of the annual Don Scott Trot: 5K on the Runway. The sold-out race raised a record-setting $7010.08 for beneficiary Able Flight.
"The 5K is the airport’s signature annual event,” commented Airport Director Douglas Hammon. "Participants and observers are always excited to get a view of the airport that is not regularly accessible to the general public.”
The family-friendly event not only provides an opportunity to enter grounds typically reserved for aircraft, but also raises funds for a beneficiary. This year donations and proceeds supported national nonprofit Able Flight, whose mission is to empower those with disabilities through flight and aviation career training. Since 2017 The Ohio State University Airport has been a training site for Able Flight, supporting the program completion of four students.
Sponsors significantly contributed toward the success of the fundraiser: Republic Airlines/LIFT Academy; Crawford, Murphy, & Tilly; Brandstetter Carroll, Inc.; Davenport Aviation, Inc.; Enterprise Holdings, Inc.; McFarland Johnson, Inc.; RS&H, Inc.; and Woolpert. Other supporters included the Ohio State Flight Team and Ohio State Aviation Alumni Society. Additional donation funds came from race registrations.
Hammon described the impact of the funds raised. “Able Flight opens the possibility of being a pilot to many, who would not otherwise achieve their greatest dream,” he said. “The funds raised from the 5K will directly support program participants paired with Ohio State’s Flight Education program.”
